Media Observation Reflection December 15, 2009

Part 2 of this assignment is to analyze the media coverage that I reviewed experienced over the last week through my observations. As previously stated in part one, I chose to follow the Yankees for 3 days over the course of a week using 8 different media sites. The media sites I observed include: the Yahoo sports web site, Fox sports, the official New York
Yankee site, major league baseball site (MLB.com), Stub hub .com, Twitter, Newsday.com and You-tube.com.

I explored these sites via the internet by using my knowledge of the media and its effect on society. I chose to follow the Yankees because I am a huge Yankee fan and I was planning on following  the coverage anyway. choosing to Follow the Yankees game for this assignment gave me a chance as a fan to get all the information I wanted and needed.

The media coverage I chose to use for my observation this week was from media sites that I use and go to when I want to get information on a subject or just browse the internet. The concepts, search engines and ways of searching that I have experienced in this course, have defiantly improved my knowledge of the media as well as  its effect on society.

The site that covered the most data on the news event was obviously the official New York Yankee site. The site that covered the least out of 8, was Twitter. Twitter is a blog site filled with links and broadcasts events but is mostly a blog. I observed throughout the series people tweeted their excitement and enthusiasm game by game but no real official news coverage was covered on twitter.  The difference that I read out of the other 7 sites I followed defiantly varied depending on how professional or bias the news site was. For instance, YouTube displayed many videos ranging from past to present. Previous series earlier wins and loses as well. These videos were posted both in favor and not in favor of the team. Newsday’s media coverage was
positive, informative and inspirational as a New York newspaper to a New York Yankee
fan and reader.

The coverage changed depending on the publisher and target audience. If the Yankees
were behind in games or points, Met fans would be routing on or “tweeting on”
the other team and Yankee fans would be making up excuses for the era in play. Their
tweets on twitter would say on the game either positively or negatively. An
example of this would be the umpires and how they made horrible calls during the
series. When ever the umpire made exceptionally bad calls it was immediately
blogged about all over twitter and even face book (which I did not cover for
this assignment) .The major league baseball site provided statistics and
strategies for the winning team and the losing team to come back in the ALCS (American
league championship series) depending on the user-generated coverage the
professional sites and coverage was much better in quality. The sites such as
fox sports, yahoo news and mlb.com provided a lot more detailed coverage and
facts and not views and options.

I really enjoyed this project because I really enjoyed the subject of media that I covered. I especially enjoyed watching the videos on each site that displayed recent clips and highlights of the covered games.

Personal Course Reflection for your Final Project

This online class was the second online class that I have taken here at Adelphi and it was my first media course. I enjoyed learning new technology and experiencing new ways to search the web. This course was designed to help us learn and form our own opinions on how the society interacts with the media. As a class and individually we looked at different media formats and learned how to participate in the media. I learned several different ways to interact with the media and analyze the impact it has on today’s society.

One of the most important lessons for me in this course was the new media assignment. I absolutely loved this. This assignment asked us many different ways that the media interacts with society today. One of the sites I discovered was linked-In. I am now developing my account and using it as a place to submit my resume and look for jobs.

The most difficult part of this course for me was the beginning. I felt so over whelmed with an abundance of new technology and I had to find the time to read through the material and learn new ways to explore the computer. This can be overwhelming, time consuming and frustrating if not gone about correctly. Once I learned and caught up with the creation of my blog I felt a sense of relief and I was able to enjoy the following assignments.

This class defiantly changed the way I think about the media and the society. Since I signed up for this class I have been reading up on so many different ways to broadcast myself and share my thoughts and feeling on issues that I feel strongly about. I have learned how to fully utilize the information that I attain via, twitter, face book, CNN, word press, LinkedIn, and blackberry just to name a few.

The assignment that we did about politics and the media was most interesting for me. I come from a family that has always followed politics and it never interested me, so I blocked it out. Over the recent presidential election I decided to get involved and I have slowly been broadening my understanding and position in this economy and society. This assignments reading helped me understand more about how the media has influenced politics both nationally and internationally.

The assignment in this course that I am most proud of is my blog. I am learning everyday new ways to utilize my blog. I am learning how to link my blog to my other sites that I am a member of and visa versa. I am learning how to write creatively, have an opinion, and document my journals with enough confidence to post it to a public forum. I plan on expanding my blog after this class is over, and look forward to seeing where it takes me.

Undergraduates discouraged despite decreased unemployment – Collegenews. December 11, 2009

Undergraduates discouraged despite decreased unemployment – Collegenews..

Now that I will  be a college graduate, the amount of career opportunities are really interesting me. It is great to hear that unemployment rates have decreased, considering I graduate in January with my B.A.  It also makes me question a few things that I never really thought about before recently .

  • Do I take the first job that comes along?
  • Do I lower my standards according to how I want to live and the money that I hope to make?
  • Do I just stay at my current job, and go back to school for my masters a.s.a.p?!
  • Why is my degree as a woman worth less than the average man according to sociological statistics?

Obviously I am not going to make any immediate decisions.  I do want more for my self . Settling is not an option because I learned to reach for the stars and a college degree was everything. Now, because our country is in a recession There  are more people being laid off than hired and opportunities are limited. I consider myself an independent woman, but all these “sexist” statistics that I am learning (in my introduction to sociology course) are new to me an are really starting to discourage and anger me.

Shocking Photos of Cairo’s ‘Garbage City’.

I visited this city a few years ago, and it did not look like these photos but… seeing these photos do not surprise me at all. It was a very dirty, old city. There were many ancient beautiful parts to egypt that I did see including ancient parts of Cairo, but clean is something it is not.
